Post-Doctoral Fellow – Eco-innovation in energy systems

 

The International Chair in Generating Eco-innovation, UniverSud Paris, France is recruiting a Post Doctoral Fellow in energy systems. The Fellow will work in a unique institutional arrangement offering considerable scope for research leading to both publication and application. The Chair is currently developing an eco-innovation research, development and commercialization collaboration focussed on the eco-city of the future, in association with the Chair’s supporting partners: ADEME, Alstom, GDF-Suez, Italcementi, Saur, and SNCF. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will work closely with Chair-partners Alstom and GDF-Suez to develop a set of collaborative research projects focussed on technical and management associated with smart grid development in France and in Europe. Maintaining a physical and virtual presence in the R&D units of both Alstom and GDF-Suez, the post-doctoral fellow will benefit from academic membership and supervision in both the Chair’s interdisciplinary research group, with offices at the Universite de Versailles a Saint Quentin-en-Yvelines, and the research group of Professor Marc Petit, at Supelec. This Post-Doctoral Fellowship accordingly brings special opportunities to blend research and training in energy systems engineering, and eco-innovation management.

 

In addition to contributing to the supervision of a PhD on the same topic or to the development of research proposals aimed at a range of French and European funding institutions, the Post-Doctoral Fellow will develop and apply research methods to define and evaluate some business models for demand response in the context of developing smart grid and increasing integration of distributed renewable energies. The planned work will consist

  • first in finding the services demand response can bring to the power market participants and the power system as a whole,

  • second proposing, developing, implementing new services to complement new ones,

  • and lastly in evaluating costs and benefits for the implicated economic agents all along the power supply chain to see which services have positive net gains and are more easy to implement.

 

Significant opportunities exist for first-author publication, collaboration in French and European research projects, and contribution to teaching of the Master’s degree in eco-innovation management, led by the Chair. The successful candidate will enjoy working in a highly interdisciplinary team which operates at the intersection of university, private and public sector investigation of the promise and challenges of eco-innovation.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Candidates must hold a completed Ph.D. in a suitable area of applied science.

  • Candidates must be capable of working effectively in an English-speaking business and academic environment. It is desirable that candidates have a working knowledge of French.

  • Applicants will be evaluated with respect to their experience and ability as applied science researchers capable of working at the intersection of university and private sector research, development and commercialization.

  • The successful applicant’s cv will demonstrated commitment to timely completion of assigned tasks, to successful publication of research results in peer-reviewed journals, to successful acquisition of research funding, and to effective contribution to team efforts.

  • The successful applicant will possess effective project management skills.

  • Candidates must be legally permitted to work in France.

 

Responsibilities (reporting to the Chair, and including but not limited to):

  • Work in a team environment engaged in building university-industry partnerships in support of eco-innovation. Grant-writing and other research fundraising activities may occupy a substantial portion of the early part of the fellowship, balanced against ongoing research activities which will begin from the date of appointment

  • Define and evaluate some services form demand response and associated business models in the context of developing smart grid and increasing integration of distributed renewable energies.

  • Contribute to the supervision of a PhD student on smart grid.

  • Contribute to the public visibility of the Chair and the Chair’s research programme by giving public lectures and representing the Chair as the Chair’s delegate.

 

Salary and duration:

Salary is internationally competitive and is commensurate with skills and qualifications. This is a 12 month contractually limited position.
