Doctorate Position at LAPLACE
Group DSF (Diélectrique Solide et Fiabilité)
The opened PhD position concerns a research work on dielectric characterization of radiation cured epoxy resin and on the impact of resin formulation and processing conditions on such properties. Two kinds of resins and two types of radiation (e-beam and X-Ray) will be considered
throughout this work. Electrical characterization techniques cover space charge measurements by the pulsed electro-acoustic method, charging/discharging current measurements, dielectric spectroscopy as main tools. Besides such means, luminescence characterization tools and fluorescence microscopy will be implemented at the lab.
The work is part of an accepted project in the framework of the program “Matériaux et Procédés” of “Agence Nationale de la Recherche” entitled “Radiation-induced polymerisation as a new process for high performance insulating materials in Electrical Engineering”.

It involves two academics partners -Laboratoire Plasma et Conversion d'Energie –LAPLACE- (UMR UPS INPT CNRS 5213), Toulouse and -Institut de Chimie Moléculaire de Reims –ICMR- (UMR UR CNRS 6229), Reims, and one industrialist - Schneider Electric (SE) whose key competency is
“Management of Electrical Energy”.

The Doctorate will be co-managed by researchers from Toulouse and Reims.
Work tasks are as follows:

  • Investigate the impact of radiation process and of material formulation on the charging behavior of materials;
  • Establish a benchmark for existing materials based on thermal curing process;
  • Investigate the nature and density of carriers with support from luminescence tools,
    microscopy techniques and chemical analyses available in the frame of the project;
  • Investigate electrical ageing of selected materials formulations.

In the frame of the project, visits and stays of the student will be organized at ICMR and SE for an active participation to the works being carried out here, for establishing exchanges and for training purpose on both polymer processing and industrial practice.

Required skills: Master in materials and/or electrical engineering oriented to materials. KeyWords:
Electrically insulating materials, electrical properties, Polymers.

Salary: 2000 € gross/month (1560 € net).
Beginning of the position : January, 1st, 2010 (possibly before)
